Position description

The group is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to work on multilingual development. The successful candidate will complete a fully funded PhD (taxes not included) and, in addition, will actively join the GRAM research group in ongoing research efforts. Moreover, the department will support a 3 or 4-month research stay abroad during the last year of his/her doctoral studies.

Priority will be given to highly motivated candidates who aspire to develop their research program in multilingual development in a multilingual context. Apart from research, the position requires teaching duties.

Group description

The Research Group on Multilingual Acquisition at the Institute for Multilingualism investigates the development of multilingualism through naturalistic, immersion and formal language acquisition processes.

More specifically, the group carries out applied linguistics research on:

  • The effects of Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction on linguistic development.
  • Social interaction and its affordances for teaching, learning and teacher development in ICLHE / CLIL / EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) contexts.
  • The acquisition and maintenance of Catalan, Spanish, foreign and heritage languages in school-age children and adults in the context of Catalonia.

We offer a full-time paid contract as a teaching research assistant, with the expectation that the applicant will apply for a PhD with the UIC doctoral school. In addition to a monthly stipend, the position will cover 80% of academic fees associated with completing the PhD (4 years).

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Recently graduated or about to finish a Master’s Degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Education, Multilingual Communication, Translation or similar.
  • Proficient (or willing to become proficient) in quantitative or qualitative data analysis.
  • Interested in teaching.
  • Fluent in English (C1 level minimum).
